There was nothing I wanted more as a teenager than to see my parents proud of something I had accomplished. Whether it was becoming the eight grade table tennis champ, competing on the high school track and field team, or singing on stage for the district Fine Arts competition, I wanted to shine and make them notice. Even now as adults I think we all have something in us that desires others to sit up and take notice. We want to shine.
“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16, NIV).
I absolutely love when athletes like Alabama University’s hero Tua Tagovailoa use their occasion of winning the big game to SHINE the light of God and acknowledge what God has done in their lives to get them there in that moment. Other athletes like Tim Tebow, Allyson Felix, and A. C. Green, movie icons like Kirk Cameron and Jim Caviezel, and singers like Carrie Underwood and MC Hammer, have used their platform of fortune and fame to promote the message of hope found in Jesus.
You and I may not be famous like the individuals mentioned above, but we still have successes and accomplishments in our lives due to the grace that God has given us. Our jobs, families, possessions and the like, have all been made possible because of God. As I read this verse, I see it as a command to use the influence I have with neighbors, co-workers, friends, and family to allow these things to now SHINE and them see Jesus in me. I may not be in the spotlight as a superstar, but my life, as others see it, needs to SHINE for God’s glory and point the world to Him. I am to be the light of the world. I have influence. How am I using it? How are you using yours?
1. When was a moment in your life when you felt like you really shinned because of your accomplishments? How did it make you?
2. What do we learn from reading Titus 2:14?
3. Read the whole passage from Matthew 5:14-16. What is your take away from todays reading about SHINE?
4. How will you use your shinning moments to SHINE for Jesus?
